Mercy Ships welcomes volunteers who would like to give of their time, efforts and expertise to the work of bringing hope and healing to the poor.  Short-term volunteers can participate from two-weeks to a year with Mercy Ships, while others may choose to serve in a long-term volunteer career capacity.

REPORTS TO

Chief Engineer, Second Engineer

 

1.                                         SUMMARY

Carry out machinery maintenance and repairs as directed

 

2.                                         ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Mechanical overhaul and repair work on marine engines and related equipment.

Repairing and maintaining pumps, hydraulic, pneumatic equipment and valves.

Operating hand tools associated with marine engines.

Servicing and fitting of various machinery components.

Repairing machinery, engines and related equipment.

Following Company Safety Management System, especially Permit to Work system.

 

3.                                         QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

 

3.1.                                 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to understand instructions and communicate back to others in clear English.

 

3.2.                                 CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / EXPERIENCE

Completion of Basic Safety Training in accordance with IMO STCW as amended.

Relevant apprenticeship and work experience working on ships.

Previous experience in mechanical servicing/fitting of plant or machinery throughout the ship.

Relevant qualifications and skills in trade, heavy engineering sector.

 

4.                                         WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
