REPORTS TO

Chief Engineer

 

1.                                         SUMMARY

In charge of Engineering Department and responsible to the Chief Engineer for the daily operation of the machinery spaces.

 

2.                                         ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensuring on a daily basis that Engineering officers and ratings, are competent and fit for their assigned duties;

Carrying out all lawful orders given by the Chief Engineer, including daily compliance of the Engineering Department with the Chief's Standing Orders;

Reporting immediately to the Chief Engineer whenever anything unforeseen happens with Engineering personnel, machinery, or spaces;

Distributing  daily work assignments to the members of the Engineering Department; this may be done in the form of watch bills, duty rosters, and work orders; specifically, compiling and posting the Duty Engineer Roster, Watch Schedule and Sea Watch Schedule in a timely fashion, with due regard to rest periods for assigned personnel;

Ensuring the proper maintenance and safe operation of all machinery;

Ensuring the safety and cleanliness of machinery spaces;

Informing the Chief Engineer about parts and supply stocks, along with projected future requirements of spare parts and stores;

Understanding the Company Safety Management System and the ship's Contingency Plan for emergency procedures.

As necessary, standing as Engineering Officer Of the Watch, whether at sea or in port.

 

3.                                         QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

 

3.1.                                 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively communicate with subordinates and senior management in clear English

 

3.2.                                 CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / EXPERIENCE

At least Certificate of Competency according to STCW 95 Section A-III/2

 

4.                                         WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud enough to require regular use of hearing protection.
