Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the forgotten poor, mobilizing people and resources worldwide, and serving people without regard for race, gender or religion.
Mercy Ships welcomes volunteers who would like to give of their time, efforts and expertise to the work of bringing hope and healing to the poor. Short-term volunteers can participate from two-weeks to a year with Mercy Ships, while others may choose to serve in a volunteer career capacity.

REPORTS TO | Second Engineer, Duty Engineer, Senior Motorman |
Assist in routine watchkeeping, maintenance and cleaning in the engine room.
Execute all orders given by Chief Engineer, Second Engineer or person in charge of the watch.
Assist with watches as designated by Second Engineer.
Assist with maintenance work ordered by the Second Engineer.
Assist with routine checks according to watchkeeping procedures.
Record appropriate readings during watch and inform the engineer of any divergence from average.
Assist with appropriate duties as specified in watchkeeping procedures.
Assist in general maintenance and cleaning as required.
Relevant knowledge of vessel’s emergency procedures.
Knowledge of Company SMS as it applies to responsibilities involved in this position.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Ability to read and interpret gauges and instrumentation. Ability to complete log sheets. Ability to effectively communicate with others in clear English.
Certificate of Competency according to STCW 95 Section A-III/4.
Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
Practical and theoretical knowledge with regard to use of hand tools and portable power tools.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
