Mercy Ships welcomes volunteers who would like to give of their time, efforts and expertise to the work of bringing hope and healing to the poor. Short-term volunteers can participate from two-weeks to a year with Mercy Ships, while others may choose to serve in a volunteer career capacity.

To act as Senior Watchkeeping officer or Duty Engineer as per schedule as well as being involved in regular engine room maintenance.
Carrying out all lawful orders given by Chief Engineer and Second Engineer;
Reporting immediately to the Chief Engineer and Second Engineer whenever anything unforeseen happens;
Ensuring the safe operation of all machinery;
Ensuring the safe and efficient performance of all personnel assigned to his supervision;
Carrying out all duties and maintenance routines as per Company instructions, with the oversight of the Chief and/or Second Engineer;
Performing all duties and maintenance routines for but not limited to, the following:
- Auxiliary engines
- Stock control of auxiliary engine spares and all chemicals on board.
Maintaining relevant knowledge of ship’s emergency procedures, including specific knowledge of the working condition of fixed emergency response systems;
Understanding the Company Safety Management System as it applies to the responsibilities of this position.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate with subordinates and senior management in clear English
At least Certificate of Competency according to STCW 95 Section A-III/1
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud enough to require continuous wearing of hearing protection.
